Supported Systems

Gestinux run on Linux and Windows.

It can be installed on Ubuntu 09.10 (Karmic Koala) up to Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal). It was not tested neither on Ubuntu 9.04 Intrepid Ibex and older versions, nor on Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity, but it should work on most Linux variants. Feedbacks are welcome !

We have successful reports from Windows 2000 to Windows 7. It was not yet tested for Windows 8, and should not work for older than Windows 2000.

It is currently not available for 64 bits architecture, or for MAC. It should be available on these machines when owners of such machines will join the developer team, to compile, package and test...

Location of programs and data

Gestinux is an application using a client-server database.

You have always to install a client program on each computer you want to use. It is light and very easy, and can be done with a few clicks. After that, you just need to choose where is located the database.

This database can be :

  • On a remote server, reachable through internet.
  • On the same computer as the client program.
  • On any other workstation or dedicated server in the local network.

The first solution can be used to access a test database.

If you don't mind having your data out of your office, and if you have a good internet connection, you can use this solution, with a hoster. In this case, no need for a local server, and you can access from anywhere. Performances will be better than with a full web application. However, some technical knowledge is required for data security.

Otherwise, for a small company, the second solution is simple. It is easy to install a free database server on a workstation.

For a more advanced usage, or a larger company, the dedicated server is better and remains easy to implement.
